Workshop FAQ / Nine practical distinctions
Armourers Ask
Short answers to questions that often sit between a quick check and a larger engineering claim.
Does a resistance check prove a body wire is reliable?
No. A stationary reading samples one condition. Appropriate movement and insulation checks may reveal faults that continuity alone misses. Record test points and cable position, and follow safe, unpowered procedures. Read the circuit guide.
Does a material label certify the complete assembly?
No. Material information must be connected to the finished construction, applicable requirements and supporting product documentation. Seams, overlaps, retention and processing can change the assembly's performance. Read the protective design guide.
Is a stiffer blade necessarily more durable?
No. Stiffness describes elastic response under defined conditions. Fatigue life also depends on geometry, processing, defects and loading history. Compare specimens under a controlled method rather than treating feel as a durability ranking. Read the blade guide.
Can foil and épée points be tested as the same circuit?
No. The conventional foil point opens a resting closed circuit; the épée point closes a contact between its two point wires. Use weapon-specific procedures, including the relevant point movement and apparatus requirements.
Can a workshop check establish certification?
No. A workshop check establishes only the observations supported by its method. Formal conformity assessment and competition acceptance have their own requirements. This website does not issue equipment approvals, test certificates or conformity decisions.
Can I repair damaged mask mesh or protective seams myself?
Remove suspect equipment from use and seek manufacturer guidance. Improvised repairs can change the protective construction. A repair that appears sound is not evidence that the original performance has been restored.
Do salt spray hours convert directly into service years?
No. Salt spray is a controlled exposure. A service-life prediction needs evidence that relates the method to the actual environment and failure mechanism. ISO 9227 results can support a defined comparison, not a universal calendar-life claim.
Which rules should an event armourer use?
Use the current rules and equipment-control instructions applicable to that event, including the relevant federation and organiser requirements. Check official updates and do not rely on an archived article for a current acceptance threshold. Start with the official FIE rules collection where appropriate.
What belongs in a useful bench note?
Include item identity, symptom, setup, method, raw result, changes made and the limits of the conclusion. Separate what you observed from what you think caused it. Our local bench-note tool builds a plain-text draft for copying or download; it sends nothing.
