The local bench-note tool
The contact tool builds text in your browser. Its script does not transmit entries to a server, store them in localStorage or place them in a cookie. The prepared text remains in the current page until you change or leave it; your browser may separately restore form entries according to its settings.
“Copy” writes the prepared text to your device clipboard when you grant the required browser access. Other applications with clipboard access may then read it. “Download .txt” creates a local text file, which remains on your device until you remove it. You control any subsequent sharing. Do not enter sensitive personal information or confidential technical material.
If you email us
Sending an email is a separate action through your mail provider. We receive the address, name if supplied, message and any attachments you choose to send. We use this information to handle the enquiry, consider corrections and maintain a relevant correspondence record. Our usual legal basis is legitimate interests in operating an independent publication and responding to readers. We may also process information where necessary to meet a legal obligation.
We retain correspondence only for as long as reasonably needed for its purpose, ongoing editorial issues or applicable legal requirements, then delete or anonymise it. We do not sell correspondence or add senders to a marketing list merely because they contact us.
Technical access information
Delivering a web page necessarily involves your IP address and request information reaching the hosting infrastructure. Hosting or security logs may include request time, requested resource, browser information and errors. Such information is used for delivery, security and troubleshooting where available, on the basis of legitimate interests. The page scripts do not add analytics, advertising pixels or third-party tracking libraries.
Service providers handling hosting or email may process information on our behalf. Information may also be disclosed where legally required or necessary to establish or defend legal claims. Where personal data is transferred internationally, applicable legal safeguards must be used.
Your choices and rights
Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal data, and may object to processing based on legitimate interests. These rights are subject to legal conditions. We may need proportionate information to verify identity before acting on a request.
You can raise a concern with us at the address above and may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom. There is no solely automated decision-making with legal or similarly significant effects in the supplied site tools.

Following an external source link takes you to another organisation's site, whose privacy practices apply there. We do not control those sites. This notice may be updated when the publication's practices change. See also the separate cookie notice and terms of use.
